Canvas in the UK has been used as an artistic medium for many centuries now and with good reason. Traditional canvas is made from uniformly woven linen and is incredibly sturdy. Artists who work with oil paint have preferred it over cotton canvas (commonly referred to as cotton duck) for many years. The main reason for this is that linen is higher quality fabric and is generally recognized as more durable. Cotton duck, on the other hand, is a more economical choice for many artists, particularly those who work with acrylic paint, as it has a more even weave and isn't as expensive.
In recent years, artistic expression on canvas in the UK has taken an entirely different approach. Instead of using oil or acrylic paints, artists have taken to using printer ink to transfer beautiful photographic masterpieces onto canvas. Whether the image in question is a portrait, a photograph or a piece of digital artwork, canvas has a way of adding a depth and charm to the work that gives it a charming finish. Any piece of work printed onto canvas suddenly has an old-world charm that it can't have on any other medium. A framed photograph on canvas looks exquisite, as does just about any other piece of digital artwork. It would seem, then, that even in this new millennium, canvas will maintain it's place as a traditional medium for enterprising artists everywhere.
